SUMMARY:Crossroads Vegetable Garden - 2026 Spring Planting
DESCRIPTION:Join us for Spring Planting! \nWe will be planting Swiss chard\, kale\, beets\, onions\, parsnips\, turnips\, cabbage\, potatoes and carrots – all fairly easy to grow and store into the cold season. \nEach year\, Transition Bay volunteers grow about 500 pounds of vegetables from these four raised beds for the St Margarets Bay Food Bank.  They greatly appreciate this fresh produce.  The Crossroads Garden is also intended to inspire everyone about the benefits of starting or expanding a home vegetable garden.  This is becoming very important in this era of rapidly increasing food costs. \nTransition Bay is always looking for more volunteers to help with the garden.  If interested\, reach out to us at: info@transitionbay.ca.

SUMMARY:Coastal Classroom & Rooted Learning: Climate Adaptation Begins at Home
DESCRIPTION:For those who’ve watched the shoreline shift\, the marsh edge creep\, or the basement flood a little sooner each spring—this talk is for you. Join us for an afternoon with Rosmarie Lohnes of Helping Nature Heal\, as she brings her decades of hands-on ecological work home\, literally to the landowner’s doorstep.\nThrough her programs Coastal Classroom and Rooted Learning\, Rosmarie works directly with individuals and communities to understand how water moves through a landscape\, how soils behave under stress\, and how native plant communities can be recruited to do some of the heavy lifting when it comes to climate resilience. Her approach connects the large-scale restoration thinking behind municipal programs like ShoreUp with the kind of practical\, boots-in-the-mud knowledge that individual landowners can actually use. \nThe session will explore nature-based strategies for stabilizing landscapes and improving long-term resilience—from soil health and mycelial networks to hydrological awareness and native plant systems. Rosmarie’s work offers both practical techniques and a broader shift in how we understand our land: not just as something to be maintained\, but as part of a larger living system we can actively support. \nRosmarie Lohnes is the founder of Helping Nature Heal\, an ecological restoration and consulting firm based in Nova Scotia with over 20 years of experience working with coastal and inland landscapes across Atlantic Canada. A designated Environmental Professional (EP) through ECO Canada and a Green Shores–informed practitioner\, she is known for her deeply place-based approach to land stewardship—one that blends scientific rigour with lived ecological observation.
Her work has been recognized through multiple environmental awards and featured in regional and national media. She continues to lead projects that restore ecological function while empowering individuals and communities to become active stewards of their land. \nThis event will be held at the Tantallon Public Library\, 3646 Hammonds Plains Road\, Upper Tantallon on Sunday\, April 26th\, from 2:30 to 4:30 pm. \nThis event is free and open to the public. Donations are greatly appreciated. We welcome new volunteers to help with events like this one. Please contact us at info@transitionbay.ca for more information.

SUMMARY:Closer to Home: Voices of Hope in a Time of Crisis - film and discussion
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the screening and discussion of the 35 minute film: Closer to Home: Voices of Hope in a Time of Crisis.  A film by Local Futures and Cyrus Sutton. Produced and directed by Helena Norberg-Hodge and Anja Lyngbaek. \nWe live in a time of multiple crises\, from climate chaos\, poverty\, and war to skyrocketing costs of living. It can seem overwhelming – until we realise that we have the power to change things. ‘Closer to Home’ brings together an extraordinary array of thinkers\, writers\, and activists from every continent to make a simple but revolutionary argument: by reducing the scale of the economy\, we can not only stop the rush towards social and ecological breakdown\, but restore damaged ecosystems and increase our own personal well-being. It’s a message of hope that the world cannot afford to ignore. \n \nWatch and share the trailer here:    • Closer to Home Trailer    \nThis event is free and open to the public. SUMMARY:Kiss the Ground - film and discussion
DESCRIPTION:Join us for another great film\, followed by discussion: Kiss the Ground. \nThe solution is under our feet. \n Narrated and featuring Woody Harrelson\, Kiss the Ground is an inspiring and groundbreaking film that reveals the first viable solution to our climate crisis. \nKiss the Ground reveals that\, by regenerating the world’s soils\, we can completely and rapidly stabilize Earth’s climate\, restore lost ecosystems and create abundant food supplies. Using compelling graphics and visuals\, along with striking NASA and NOAA footage\, the film artfully illustrates how\, by drawing down atmospheric carbon\, soil is the missing piece of the climate puzzle. This movie is positioned to catalyze a movement to accomplish the impossible – to solve humanity’s greatest challenge\, to balance the climate and secure our species future. \nThis event is free and open to the public. Discussion will also pursue the benefits of close collaboration with neighbours and friends to meet these needs. \nThe workshop is free for all attending (donations are encouraged!).
