Domestic Emergency Preparedness
It seems we are in an age with an increasing numbers of emergency events, from storms, fires, flood, drought and power outages. Join us for an important two hours of discussion on preparing your home and your family for any disaster.
The workshop will cover a broad scope of potential situations – not only wildfires, storms, floods and drought but significant or extended service disruptions such as a long grid-down events and food or fuel shortages. Discussion may cover the potential for neighbourhood refuge centres, as well as the possible need for evacuation bags and supplies. Water conservation techiques during periods of drought may also be discussed.
Special guest Laura Brine, Communication and Training Coordinator, HRM Emergency Management and Community Safety, will be leading the discussion.
Born and raised in Nova Scotia, Laura Brine has dedicated her career to public service and community resilience. For ten years, Laura served as a 911 dispatcher, where she demonstrated calmness under pressure, sharp decision-making skills, and an unwavering commitment to public safety. This experience provided insight into the realities of emergency response and the importance of coordinated action.
Having transitioned into emergency management, Laura has worked for the past two years focusing on planning, coordination, and preparedness initiatives designed to strengthen community resilience. She is eager to promote preparedness strategies that ensure communities are equipped to respond effectively to large-scale emergencies. Beyond her professional work, Laura coaches various levels of basketball, including high school teams and the Basketball Nova Scotia Canada Games Team.
This two-hour workshop will be held at the Tantallon Public Library on Sunday, March 29th, from 2:30 to 4:30pm.
